#2. The Rise of Women's Sports
The popularization of Women's sports is on the rise and in record breaking numbers. 2023 has been a year of great accomplishment for women across a plethora of sports but what does this mean?
Well to begin, I would like to highlight some of the records hit this year in terms of audience in the realm of women's sports.
On August 20th, 2023, The University of Nebraska played The University of Omaha in a volleyball game which packed the stadium, drawing a crowd of over 92,000 people. This game broke the record of the most attended women's sporting event in history.
Additionally, just a couple weeks before that on August 16th, 2023, the Australian National Soccer Team played England in the semi-final of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. The 2023 Cup, held in New Zealand and Australia, drew in a record audience for Australian sports with "a reach of 11.5 million" people during that game. The Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese even called for a public holiday if Australia won. Unfortunately, Australia lost to England 1-3 but nevertheless the game drew in an astonishing crowd making history.
Those two examples were simply the two most prominent figures which demonstrated the recent growth of women's sports.
Historically men have dominated the realm of sports and only recently with the change in traditional societal norms, made possible from activism on behalf of millions who have pushed for equality, has the popularity of women's sports improved, its quality alongside it.
Many athletes who have protested for equal pay as men's teams have received extreme backlash from the public, pushing back years of progress as critics slam women. The main point of critics being that women cannot make as much as the men because their games do not bring in near as much revenue. While it is true that men's sports do bring in much more revenue than women's sports, and therefore get paid more, it is important to note that only as more, cities, states, and countries invest in their women's sports will the quality of the women's games increase. Sure, equal pay may be too much as of right now, but disregarding the need for investment in women's sports is ignorant.
The fight for gender equality in sports is not simply a fight for female athletes getting paid more but rather it is push for women to be taken seriously and professionally not just in the realm of sports but in society as a whole.
Athletes like LeBron James, Chris Paul, Simone Biles, and Alex Morgan have contributed greatly to the rise of women's sports but ultimately the general public is what contributes the most to its rise. There is so much more potential for women's sporting events as 2023 has shown and hopefully the positive trend in the course of women's sports continues.
