#6. Attack On Titan: Just Anime?

Hello, welcome back to my blog! This past Saturday the final part of Attack On Titan was released, finally putting to end one of, if not, the greatest show of all time. I know how this looks-- really, anime--but in my lifetime I've watched dozens of TV shows and not a single one can compare to Attack On Titan! It is truly a masterpiece and if you haven't already, you should watch it.

Background

If you don't know already, Attack On Titan is a show which follows Eren Yeager, the shows main character, on his mission for freedom. The show begins with all of human kind surrounded by walls which protect them from the outside world, riddled with man eating titans. Most people are happy living in the walls, protected from the titans, but Eren is frustrated. He feels trapped inside the walls and he dreams of being able to go and travel beyond them.

One day, out of nowhere, the titans break through the walls of an outer district (depicted below) where Eren lives. As the titan crush the town and devour citizens, Eren tries to make it back to his home, to his mom, but discovers her trapped under debris. A titan approaches, and Eren's friends are forced to carry him away. Eren watches as him mom gets eaten--which is the exigence of the whole show-- in a heart wrenching scene.

(This show is able to capture terror and heartbreak so well!) Eventually Eren joins the scouts, a regiment of the military whose purpose is to travel outside the walls to gain knowledge on titans and the outside world (to quench his curiosity and to gain revenge for his mom).

Masterpiece

At first glance this may seem like just another show but what sets AOT apart from all others is it's insanely well crafted and complex storyline.

Hajime Isayama, the creator of AOT, has proved to be an insanely talented writer. The whole show is so carefully constructed that all the episodes and timelines within the show are connected. The very first episode of Attack On Titan connects all the way forward to the last episode is such a way that will leave you astonished looking back.

The show is an emotional rollercoaster and divulges into themes of human existence and power. By the middle of the show, there is not even a clear "good" side. All humans are just doing what they think is right and viewers are left in awe over how complex the writing is, not knowing who is in the right or wrong.

I know I'm not really being specific here, but there is nothing I can really say without spoiling a major plot twist the show.

I could go on forever but I'm going to keep it at this. I hope this gets you at least a bit more insight on the show, but it's just something you have to experience for yourself to really get.

I hope you found this interesting and perhaps even watch the show. AOT is not just anime; it is an amazing piece of entertainment which will change your view of life. I promise if you stick past the first couple of episodes, you'll find yourself having a new favorite show. Thanks for reading. Stay tuned for the next blog. :)

Here's a small clip of the show if you're interested.
