#10. Lab-Grown Meat: The Future?

Image
Yes, this chicken was never alive Hello,   welcome back to my blog! Today I wanted to splatter about something I've been researching. If you've been keeping up with my recent posts you may have noticed a trend in my writing (it's been mostly about the food industry). Many of us know the Earth's environment has been on the decline, but not many single out the food industry as a major source of it's worsening condition. In searching for solutions, I encountered that scientists are currently developing lab-grown meat (aka cultivated meat). The meat in the picture above is a product of cultivated meat. Doesn't it look good? I thought the idea sounded gross but now I don't see why it would be. This meat is nearly identical to meat that comes straight from the bones of an animal. In fact, nobody seems to think the taste is any different!  How it works is that cells are harvested from existing animals and are then replicated outside the body of the animal in vats c

#9. Problem Solved.

Hello,  welcome back to my blog! Today I wanted to splatter some more about the food industry. As I've done more research, I've realized that this comic is relevant to many issues surrounding our food.  The lady in the comic is "solving" a problem the guy has, a fly problem. She sprays the fly with chemicals which obviously would kill the fly but doesn't seem to notice or care that those chemicals pose a threat to the guy as well. Sound familiar? Today, as many of us know, our produce is sprayed with harsh chemicals known as pesticides, in order to stop critters from damaging the crop. These companies spray these pesticides, and are often coming out with stronger and more potent ones, without thorough research as to what the effects are to humans in the long term. Sure, people can avoid ingesting these chemicals by washing their produce but isn't it alarming that these chemicals are allowed to be sprayed on our food. I'm still in the process of doing more

#8. The Walking Dead: Just Fiction

Image
Hello,   welcome back to my blog! Today I wanted to take a break from reality and splatter about one of my favorite shows:  The Walking Dead.  Most people know about of it, perhaps you've watched it, either way I hope you find the concept interesting. Who doesn't love fantasying about the world ending, and wandering around the world beating up zombies? If you said, "not me", then you probably realize you'd be one of the billions of people that die within the first month of the outbreak. It takes a truly determined and lucky person to survive a zombie apocalypse. In case of a real world meltdown though, would it be possible for someone to survive? Just how realistic is  The Walking Dead? Well, not at all! I'd like to point out a couple instances where the show should have ended. Where the only reason the characters survive is because the writers need the show to keep going. 8x16: Bullets sh oot backwards?  In the season finale, Rick (the main character) and

#7. "Fresh"

Hello,  welcome back to my blog! Hope you've spent Thanksgiving well! Today I wanted to splatter about a film I've watched in class: Fresh .  This  documentary, directed by Anna Sofia Joanes, divulges the ugly truth surrounding the United State's food system.  In the past, I don't think I've ever thought too deeply about where our food comes from or how we have so much of it. As a fast food worker, I've witnessed firsthand how ignorant people are of where their food comes from or its value.  (I don't like working here but it's ok) Mobile order never get's picked up?  Throw it away. Leftover food during a closing shift, throw it all away. Someone complains about their order? Throw it all away and make it over. It seems anyways that no matter how much food goes to waste, there's an endless supply to replenish from. In the back of my mind I always knew, as most people do know, that our food comes from unsustainable and horrific practices, but I neve
